My Role

I was a member of the Traktor design team formed by 2 product designers (incl. myself) and 1 team lead. My duty was to prioritize features based on user feedback, conduct internal stakeholder feedback sessions, sketch and prototype new solutions, support the creation of user surveys, sync and coordinate with other internal departments like Customer Support or Industrial Design.

The Challenge

The quantity of  user feedback was considerable especially on the online medium but also in the internal Customer Support department. Considerable internal communication effort was required in order to achieve alignment.

Personal Contribution

  • identified and prioritized problematic areas of the existing product by centralizing user feedback from Customer Support, Artist Relations, public forums an one on one user feedback sessions
  • co-created personas for our product for better aligning the development teams and various departments
  • made the development timeline more visible by creating the initial development plan for implementing new features using the “User Story Mapping” technique (by Jeff Patton)
  • developed prototypes in QT-QML using the actual product and therefore reducing the development time
  • created the initial visualization idea for the STEMS feature (STEMS are a multi track audio format)

Example Project – STEMs Visualization

Prototype (view switch and stripe height optimization)

Implementation

Companywide Contributions

  • helped synchronizing UX efforts across the department’s multiple teams (our department had 3 UX designers and 1 UI designer)
  • mentored and supported the adoption of tools like Framer or Sketch by the other UX designers within the department
  • led a cross department workgroup dedicated to unifying documentation across the company (team was formed by 4 UX designer incl. myself)
  • contributed to the hiring and on-boarding of new colleagues

My Role

I was part of a team formed by 2 product designers (incl. myself) and 1 team lead. In this team my duties related to this project were to create the initial design direction for the product, prioritize features and gather user feedback, conduct internal stakeholder feedback sessions, support the creation of user surveys, sync and coordinate with other internal departments like Customer Support.

The Challenge

As STEMS were a concept that was long under development before I joined Native Instruments, most of the details were already established so there was not much design freedom. Nevertheless the product itself (the Stem Creator tool) was not set in stone and I was able to set the direction for the teams.

My Contribution

  • provided initial concept direction
  • created the first prototype of the application and the first wireframes
  • helped the internal team alignment by closely working with 2 other UX designers and 1 UI designer
  • contributed to the release strategy as Program Level Product Designer
  • conducted internal stakeholder feedback sessions
  • contributed to the quantitative user surveys creation for assessing market response and user needs

Initial Prototype

The initial prototype provided a direction for the design process but also a first opportunity to get user feedback.

My Role

I was part of a team formed by 2 iOS developers, 1 UX/UI designer (myself) and a project coordinator (also myself). My duty was to create the interface language, provide the graphic assets, coordinate the team and act as a bridge between the team and the CxO level.

The Challenge

The projet had a very short timeframe for development and I also needed to cover the position of the UI designer in the team in parallel to the coordination.

My Contribution

  • created the first concept in less than a week
  • developed the click-dummy prototype for user testing in quartz compose
  • provided the user interaction guidelines
  • created the design direction and iOS icon design

My Role

I was part of a team formed by 3 developers, 1 UX/UI designer (myself) and one project coordinator (also myself). My duty was to coordinate the team and act as a bridge between the team and the CxO level while also working on the interface maintenance.

The Challenge

For this project it was interesting to balance the design duties with the project coordination duties. Another particularity of this project was that one of the developers was remote and it required an extra communication effort.

For the project a special challenge was the design of a responsive interface capable of adapting to different screen resolutions.

My Contribution

  • successfully coordinated the team that included both on-site and remote team members
  • provided the interface graphic assets while covering a double role in the team
  • designed and conducted co-creation sessions with the team members
  • involved the development team members in user feedback sessions
  • due to the variety of device resolutions I proposed the usage of vectorial graphic resources for the interface rather than plain jpg/png
  • designer color customisation and themes to the users at no extra development cost (due to the above vectorial solution)
  • created a responsive interface capable of adapting to the variety of display sizes (Android as an ecosystem supports a wide range of devices, each of the with different resolutions and pixel densities)

open project

My Role

I was part of a team formed by 2 iOS developers, 1 UX/UI designer and during the project I also became the project coordinator. My duty was to create the interface architecture, create the graphic assets, coordinate the team and act as a bridge between the team and the CxO level.

The Challenge

A nice challenge of this project was adapting the already created iPad interface to the smaller screen of the iPhone. The same design language was kept and adapted to the different dpi of the iPhone screen so that the user can instantly recognize the relation to the initial iPad app.

Having a size constrain forced me to thing more thoroughly about interface simplification and the solution that I found were then reimplemented also on the bigger screen of the iPad.

My Contribution

For the first release I contributed with:

  • successfully coordinated the project team by providing a clear direction and greatly reducing the “back and forth” decisions
  • created roadmaps and release planning by estimating the tasks together with the team members
  • designed the initial interface concept and provided design direction
  • developed prototypes and new ideas ideas that after validation got implemented not only in this software bu also in other products
  • conducted user research and user testing sessions
Other notable areas I contributed directly:

  • ameliorated the ergonomics and usability of the user interface
    • track info header color and layout
    • settings and recording pane functionality
    • library design update
    • sync-meter indicator usability
  • created new interactions for different parts of the project that were successfully implemented and adapted to the entire product range
    • settings pane interaction design
    • pitch bend solution
    • pitch value display
    • record and auto-mix indicators
    • simplification for the audio modes settings

CROSS DJ HD for iPad

Cross DJ HD for iPad is a powerful mobile DJ-ing application that supports desktop level functions like: beat-match, auto-sync, effects, loops, scratch, headphones monitoring, MIDI and many more
open project

My Role

I was part of a team formed by 2 iOS developers, 1 UX/UI designer (myself) and during the project I also became the project coordinator. My duty was to co-create the interface architecture, develop a new UI language, coordinate the team and act as a bridge between the team and the CxO level.

The Challenge

Release deadline was 2 weeks with a hard deadline; the winter NAMM show.
I learned that colocation is critical when the project has a hard deadline. Working together and directly with the developers was a success.

We managed to develop and implement the first version of the interface in just 10 days even though, at that time, the term “Agile team” was not so familiar to us.

My Contribution

  • created the first layout structure
  • designed the graphical user interface and provided initial design direction
  • provided regular updates and maintenance for the various functions of the software
  • conducted user testing sessions that validated assumptions before implementation and reduced the risk for the release
  • developed prototypes and created new ideas for the product
  • created roadmaps for planning and estimated the development time and cost (for releases between 2012 and 2013)

Notable personal contributions:

  • ameliorating the ergonomics and usability of the user interface and it’s structure compared to the competition
    • clear track info header color and layout
    • library design matching the most up to date iOS paradigms
    • improved sync-meter indicator design validated through user testing
    • UX and ergonomics direction resulting in a more usable software by having the correct set of controls visible at any given moment
  • designed new interaction models that were successfully implemented and adapted to the entire product range of the company
    • easy to control pitch bend solution
    • easily accessible pitch value display
    • record and auto-mix indicators integrated in a seamless way
    • simplification for the audio modes in settings
