Cross DJ for Android is a powerful mobile DJ-ing application that turns your device into a complete mixing platform. It has all the features of any desktop level DJ-ing application including: beat-match, auto-sync, effects, loops, scratch and more.

My Role

I was part of a team formed by 3 developers, 1 UX/UI designer (myself) and I also served as the project coordinator. My duty was to adapt the interface architecture to multiple resolutions, coordinate the team and act as a bridge between the team and the CxO level.

Achievements:

  • successfully led the project for a team that included both on-site and remote team members
  • provided the interface graphic assets while covering a double role in the team
  • ideation and prototyping together with the team members
  • involved the development team members in feedback sessions

Interesting findings:

  • after a few tests we realized that it is far more efficient to use a vectorial interface rather than plain jpg/png files
  • as a side effect we were then capable of offering color customisation and themes to the users at no extra development cost
  • the huge variation of screen sizes and dpi posed an interesting challenge and forced us to rethink the way we approach the phone and tablet interfaces, the line between tablets and phones became more blurry in the market

A nice challenge of this project was adapting the already created iPad interface to the smaller screen of the iPhone. The same design language was kept and adapted to the different dpi of the iPhone screen so that the user can instantly recognize the relation to the initial iPad app.

Some interesting findings:

  • during the project we learned that the iPhone has a slightly different user base that the iPad
  • having a size constrain forced me to thing more thoroughly about interface simplification and the solution that I found were then reimplemented also on the bigger screen of the iPad

Cross DJ Remote iPad

crossdjremote-images01 crossdjremote-images02 crossdjremote-images03
Cross DJ Remote for iPad is a very useful tool for controlling your Cross mixing application via wifi. It emulates the U-MIX Control midi interface and offers many dynamic interaction solutions that are not possible on a hardware controller.

My Role

I was part of the the project team formed by 2 developers (one of them remote), 1 UX/UI designer (myself). During the project I also became the project coordinator. My duties were to define the interface structure, provide the graphic assets, coordinate the internal and external team members and communicate with the upper management.

This was a very interesting project to work on simply because we had to emulate a hardware device on the iPad’s software touch interface. While the specs were very simple and the design had to follow the U-MIX Control, the actual realization required quite a few user interaction tricks. The jog wheel proved to be one of the most important features so it had to provide a level of feedback close to the real hardware. The implementation required an interesting adaptation as light and shadows that were needed to mimic the normal hardware rotational movement.

Direct continuous communication with the developers meant that the result was achieved quicker and the product had better quality.

Achievements:

  • regular updates and testing were possible using the developed graphics library
  • project was delivered in a very short timeframe avoiding any cost of delay
